Dog Intuition

Isn’t it amazing how much dogs know?  They know when things are as they should be – they’re relaxed, happy, enjoying life as only a dog can.

But then things change, not because we want change but because change suddenly becomes a part of life.   I’m not talking about drastic change.  They still get their walks when they expect them, get fed at the same time, get the same amount of attention, but you can tell that for them things just aren’t right.  I had to go into hospital earlier this week – just overnight – but as far as they are concerned things haven’t been quite right since.   Hubby’s doing the dog walking at the moment, they love him to bits, there’s no problem there, but they still seem a bit, well….. deflated.

Dogs really are such sensitive souls – sometimes you have to stand back for a moment to appreciate how we’re so very lucky to share our lives with such wonderful animals.

Sorry for the last minute changes this week…

I’m really sorry about the changes I’ve had to make this last week, but thank you to my lovely customers for being so understanding.    It’s all got very difficult as my mum is still in Warwick Hospital after her fall last week (she broke a hip and arm but luckily was with friends at the time so got to hospital quickly).    So at the moment I’m spending lots of time going up and down the motorway to try and look after her as much as I can.

We’re managing fine with the bookings we have at the moment – thanks to my lovely husband, Arthur, who’s been doing a great job – I don’t know how I’d deal with all this without you!! – and also big, big thanks to my friend Carole for stepping in after my frantic phone call on Thursday – thank you so, so much!!!

But I still don’t know how things are going to go, as obviously this is a really big thing for Mum to cope with at her age (coming up 80!)  so if you’re thinking of booking your dog in for boarding in the next few weeks, please if you could call Carole who runs Happy Dog Homestay in Street it would make things much easier for us here until I know a bit more about what’s happening.

But don’t worry Conker, Breeze, Ruby and Lottie – we’re all set up to look after you!!

Vacancies…….

Having fun in the field

Well, the season is getting underway now and I’m getting asked quite a lot about vacancies.    I thought it might be easier to let you know on here.

I’m booked up now for all weekends up to the 7th May (that one is still free at the moment).  I do have  vacancies for odd days in between, so if you don’t need weekend boarding, I may still be able to help you.  Best to ask!!

Thanks to all my lovely customers and really looking forward to have your lovely dogs staying with us!

Dog DNA testing – I’ve found a video about it

This is quite interesting.    Thought it might follow on from my last post.    I’m still not tempted to do it for mine though…..

Dog DNA Testing?

Who am I, mummy?

Just browsing the internet while the dogs were having a sleep yesterday I came across something I’d never heard of before.   I knew people could have DNA testing from the occasional glance at some of those crazy daytime TV shows, but  DNA testing for dogs?  And why?

Well it’s really quite interesting, particularly if you have a mixed breed dog.   They can actually tell you which breeds your dog is made up of.   Isn’t that amazing?   Seemingly these test can show up breeds even down to around 10% of the dog’s make-up.

Dog DNA tests are quite common in the pedigree dog world it seems,  as it’s possible to tell you if your dog is really totally pure-bred, or indeed, just as in the human scenario, can actually show proof of parentage.

Sometimes I think I must be quite behind the times!

I can see this could help dog behaviourists too, as different types of dogs – hounds, terriers, etc – have different traits it could be very helpful in knowing which way to approach the dog in dealing with sorting out behavioural problems.

And how do they do this test?  I had visions of people sticking needles into their dogs to get some blood to test, but it’s actually not like that at all.   You can get kits – they’re widely available and even sell them on Amazon – and it’s done with a swab taken from the inside of the cheek, so if you’re thinking of doing it, it’s not painful or upsetting for the dog.

I must admit, I don’t feel the need to be rushing off to do any DNA testing myself on my own dogs.   I’m happy with them being themselves and don’t really feel the need to delve too deep, but I can see that it could be quite interesting to know some more, particularly if you have a very mixed up dog  that you have no idea what could be in there!   Now that could be quite a revelation.

A sad goodbye to Jake

Jake last summer

We’ve had a sad week this week – our old dog, Jake had to be put to sleep.  It was sort of expected – he went to the vet’s six months ago for something routine, and while there was diagnosed with a tumour in his tummy.   They didn’t hold out much hope at that stage.   They offered to operate but said they would probably not resuscitate him if the tumour was malignant.

But we decided then we’d rather give him a chance.  Jakey was an old dog.  We’ll never know how old because we got him as a rescue dog from Happy Landings Animal Shelter near Shepton Mallet.    He was basically fit and happy and not in any pain, so we decided that we would carry on as we were, just keep monitoring him and at least give him as much time as he was due.  We knew from experience that we would know when the time was right for him to go.

And that time came this week.  One day he was fine, galloping around in the field, munching down his food, sleeping happily in his bed.   During the night he started to have problems and had to go out a couple of times.  In the morning he didn’t want to go out for his walk.  Stayed in his bed while the others went out.  Wouldn’t eat his breakfast.   Sat beside me in his bed all day as I gave him lots of cuddles and tried to get him at least to drink, but he wouldn’t.

I’d already arranged for the vet – we knew and he knew that it was his time.

We miss him very, very much and we were really lucky to have had him share our lives for too short a time…

Finding dog home boarding if you don’t live near us

Just chilling out ....

If you’re reading this and would really like to give home boarding a try with your dog but you’re not near us here in Somerset, there’s a website that will point you in the right direction.  Take at look at the National Home Boarding Register – they list a huge selection of dog home boarding places all over the UK.

Go on – give your dog a holiday too!    He’ll thank you for it!

Do I need my own dog insurance to home board my dog?

Dog insurance should cover your vet's fees

No if your dog is not insured, it is not necessary for you to have your own dog insurance for him to be home boarded.

As I said yesterday, we have our own business insurance through the very reputable Cliverton Insurance.   All registered home boarding premises are supposed to be insured, although this is always worth checking wherever your dog is staying.

Personally, I think pet insurance is definitely a good idea. We have our own dogs insured on an ordinary pet plan and for Willow in particular (he had a really big fit over a year ago and is still on medication, although it’s reducing now) it’s been a godsend.   I don’t need to tell you how easily vet’s bills can mount up, and to know that these are covered gives real peace of mind.

Choosing an insurance company to insure your dog with is a complete a minefield.  They all seem to be shouting at you ‘choose me!’  by offering different things but it’s definitely a case of reading the small print to make sure you’re happy with what you’re being offered.  Some only cover your dog up to a certain limit, some only cover your dog for any one condition for a certain length of time (in our case, we found out ours only covered Willow for the first twelve months which didn’t go down too well….).   It’s easy to get caught out so please make sure you know what you’re insured for!     Then there’s the matter of how much the excess is.

Then there’s how easy is it to make a claim?   Some people I know have to pay their vet’s bill upfront and then claim back off the insurance which I think is a pretty hideous way of doing things.    With ours they send on a form, you fill it in and take it to your vets and they do the rest, you just get billed for the excess and the VAT.

Some insurance companies offer cover for boarding fees if your holiday if cancelled or you can’t go for any reason.  If you’re dog is coming to stay with us here,  don’t worry about taking out cover for boarding fees – I don’t take deposits or any money upfront and you only pay for the time your dog is with us.  If you have to cut short your holiday for any reason please don’t worry about coming to pick up your dog at any time you want to…. I’m not going to charge you for time you haven’t been there.  But then my customers know that!

Do we have to be insured to home board dogs?

I don’t get asked this very often, but I thought it was worth making the point here.

But the answer is – Yes, of course we do – but it”s a specialist insurance so needs a specialist insurance company.   In fact we’re insured with Cliverton Insurance.   They’re a very well known insurance company in the animal business world, providing cover for  everything from zoos and safari parks, working dogs such as security and sniffer dogs, through to all types of dog businesses, be they home boarding like us, or dog beauticians, dog kennels, dog trainers.

Anyway, the point it, we’re well covered with Cliverton Insurance!

Friendly Dog Walkers

I’m just not used to dog walking in towns and it always comes as quite a shock.  But a very nice shock…..

Here, our dogs walk in our fields.   We don’t really see anyone, well apart from our neighbouring farmers and Julia who keeps her herd of horses ‘through the hole in hedge’ who are always nice to have a chat with.    Julia that is, and the farmers…  and the horses too come to that.

But then I go to my mum’s house in Warwickshire and walking the dogs is a totally different experience.    My mum really does live in the town, so there are designated places that you take your dog to walk.   One of them in particular is a lovely place – along the river and an old railwayline that runs by it with loads of space, so is also really popular.

As soon as I parked up and got my dogs out of the car the guy in the next car was just putting his away and chattered away to me about his dog and how it was a bit muddy, etc etc, as if he’d known me for years.   But it didn’t stop there.  Everyone – every single person – who was walking their dogs at least said ‘hello’ to me.  Most commented on my mutley crew – in a nice way.   I was obviously very polite about their dogs too.   I didn’t know any of these people, and they’d never seen me before, but there was something really wholesome and uplifting about the whole experience.     (At this point you’re probably thinking ‘I want some of what she’s on’, that never happens to me, my walks are normally a venture into chaos and everyone scowls – sorry, maybe I was lucky with the people and dogs that happened to be about,  but that’s just the way it was!)

There seems to be something really good about dogs that’s brings people together in a friendly way.

I was really impressed!
